photo above was taken at the Elizabeth Marine Ways showing workmen sitting
atop a scow that is under construction, the photo was probably taken
during the early 1900s. JW writes about working on scows numerous
times in his journal. The first entry is on
9, 1900 when he writes about scows being at the Ways, several times he
writes about working on Government ("Gov") scows including
May 10, 1902. JW writes on
that working on a scow is " hardest work I ever
done." The last entry is on
July 7, 1915 when
he is on a scow while working in Dravosburg.
scow is a barge constructed of "unusually large timbers, designed to
accept rocks, gravel and dirt loaded into compartments." The debris
is then taken to another location and dumped by means of opening the doors
located on the sides.
